Money, money, money... The bank system in Portugal is quite modern, even sophisticated: for instance, the cashpoint machines, of which there are plenty, offer more services than in other countries, e.g. payment for utility bills, charging mobile phones and taxes. As member of the European union, Portugal is part of the world wide banking system, and it is easy to transfer monies in nearly all currencies to or from Madeira quickly and efficiently. The financial activities are under a strict control by the central Bank of Portugal.  All banks in Madeira also take care of issues of other branches in Portugal. Traveller’s cheques as well as all the major credit cards are accepted everywhere.By the way, offshore bank accounts can only be held by non-residents (living outside of Portugal for more than 183 days), the same goes for offshore companies in the Free Trade Zone.
