Buying Property

It is no longer problem for foreigners to acquire property in Portugal. The registration of property and the notary service – which is being partially privatised at the moment - are well established but it is important to have a property thoroughly checked before paying any monies.

In the past, due to the fact that many Madeirans did not attend school, before the revolution of 1974, property and inheritance lines were often not registered with the authorities. Furthermore, many Madeirans left the island in the 1930 – 1940´s for other countries, and as the families are large, a house might have a legal unclear situation, with many owners all over the world. Therefore: A house might be pretty but difficult to buy!

Luckily, there are many nice properties at good prices on the market, and the price level is lower than for e.g. in the Canary Islands or the Algarve. We will help you avoid any pitfalls.
